DIY Manually

Building your own backlinks is the cheapest link building option (depending on how much you value your own time), but I must warn you… It is very tedious and repetative work.

Most webmasters in the western world outsource this work to freelancers based in coutries with weaker currencies.

If you don’t quite have enough money to buy link building tools or outsource the work, this is the best option for you.

And even though manual link building is far from fun, you’ll gain experience which you can use later on to better train and guide your freelancers.

Blog Commenting

Blog commenting is a fast and easy method which can get you backlinks from lots of unique domains.

For this technique we need to find blogs which allow dofollow links in their comments.

(dofollow links give you link juice, while nofollow links pass on no link juice)

To find these dofollow blogs we can search for footprints (common phrases) left on websites which use the WordPress comment plugin ‘keywordluv’ as this plugin usually uses dofollow links.

To find blogs which use Keywordluv Google this phrase:

yourname@yourkeywords says “dog training”

And replace only “dog training” with your keyword or niche.

You will now be presented with a large list of blogs related to your niche which allow dofollow links in their comments.

Please note that not ALL of the sites will have dofollow links, a small percentage (around 10%) may have nofollow enabled, but the majority will be dofollow.

(Nofollow links are an important part of an organic looking backlink portfolio, so don’t ignore them completley)

Forum Signatures

Forum signatures can be great for both traffic and backlinks.

Most forums allow their members to link to their sites in their signatures which appear below each post they make, and you also get to use your keyword in the anchor text.

This method requires that you contribute to the community by posting relevent and useful content and helping people out by answering the questions they post.

Posting short messages like “Great post” or “Thanks” will mark you as a spammer and risk your posts or account being deleted by a moderator, losing all of your backlinks in the process.

It’s also important that you only use this method in forums related to your niche.

Joining a cooking related forum and using ‘Laser Pubic Hair Removal’ as the anchor text for a link in your signature is a waste of time as your account won’t last 5 minutes.

Finding forums related to your niche is easy, just go to google and search for “your niche + forum”, now do the following:

• Explore each site to find those which allow signature links and bookmark them.
• Use the free SEOQuake Firefox plugin to weed out the foums which have nofollow signature links.
• Now you have a list of forum which allow dofollow signature links and BOOM you’re in business.

Bear in mind that most forums won’t allow you to customize your signature until you’ve been a member for X number of days and have made X amount of posts, so, for the first week or two just take it slow, join all of the forums you can find and start making 1 or 2 good posts every day.

Once you’ve got a healthy number of posts and you’re able to create your custom signature just go to your ‘user control panel’ and click on ‘edit signature’.

Now you can add your links (don’t add too many)

Your signature, with links, will now appear under all future post your make, and depending on the forum settings they’ll also appear under each post you made from the day you signed up.

Article Marketing

Article marketing for backlinks is a simple concept… Submit articles to article directories (big list here) and get a backlink from each one.

In ye olde days of SEO, article marketing was a slow and mundane task, writing 400+ word articles just to get one backlink isn’t one of my favourite past times.

You see, to get any benefits from your backlinks you need those links coming from unique pages. Writing one article and submitting it to hundreds of article directories will just only give you backlinks from pages with duplicate content… Not too good for SEO.

So back in the day we had to write unique articles for each directory. Major pain in the ass. Sure, you could speed it up a little by continually rewriting those PLR articles, but still… Major pain in the ass.

Today however we have article spinning which makes everything so much easier.

Article spinning can turn one article into hundreds or even thousands of unique articles.

This is done by rewriting words and sentences in the original article and combining those different variations to create multiple unique articles, all without changing the message of the original.

Spinning articles is pretty easy, explaining how to do it is not! So for the sake of time I’m not going to explain article spinning in this post (maybe later).

Personally I don’t spin my own articles any more, I used to, but it’s a lot easier to buy them ready spun from The Leading Articles. (check that site for a free sample)

Once you have a spun article you can throw it into an unspinning tool (like the one on The Leading Articles) and create multiple unique articles.

Now you’re ready to take article marketing to the next level.

If you’re doing this manually without the use of account creation tools like SEnuke you’ll need to go and create accounts on some article directories – here’s a list to start you off.

Once you’re accounts are ready, log into them and start posting your articles.

No need to worry about catchy headlines and clickthrough rates here, we’re doing this for SEO purposes only.

Now to get backlinks from your articles you’ll need to create some text for your bio box.

A bio box is a short blurb at the end of your article which tells the reader about you, the author.

And for most article directories its the only place you can place a link.

There’s no need to write an epic life story here guys, we just want a backlink.

Social Bookmarking

Social bookmarking sites allow people to save, organize and share links to their favourite sites with others, the main benefit being your bookmarks are not stored on your computer – but on a website which you can access from any computer with an internet connection.

In the early days of web 2.0, bookmarking sites gained mass popularity and went viral, and we all know what happens to sites that go viral – Google love and lots of Page Rank!

Meaning that social bookmarking sites were once one of the hottest places to get backlinks from.

For an SEOer the premise was simple… Create accounts on social bookmarking sites and bookmark all of your own websites and pages, gaining yourself backlinks from sites which Google loves. This was once one of the easiest ways to get backlinks.

These days though, due to mass spamming, social bookmarking sites are a lot strickter with their users, so you have to be careful with the content you post.

For example: creating an account and bookmarking every page of your site in one day will get your account terminated before you’ve even logged out.

To avoid this you have to make your account look natural, like you’re a real person bookmarking random things you’ve discovered on the web.

So for each page of your own site you bookmark, throw in some random pages from Google news along with it.

Also, limit the number of daily bookmarks for each account to four a day so you stay under the radar and out of trouble.

One of the downsides to social bookmarking is the inability to use custom anchor text. Instead, bookmarking sites use the title of the page you’re bookmarking as the achor, so unless you’re meta title is the exact keyword (which I reccomend for on page SEO) you won’t get much of a boost for your keyword.

So what’s the point then?

As I’ve mentioned before, a diverse linking profile is essential for SEO.

This means that the links you build should include dofollow and nofollow, and shouldn’t all use the same anchor text.

Diversify!

Diversity is natural, and Google LOVES natural.

Web 2.0 Properties

What are web 2.0 properties?

Simply put…

Web 2.0 properties are sites which are driven by their users, meaning that the users, or members, create the content.

Google loves user driven sites!

Take a look at Squidoo.

You’ll see that the whole site is made up of pages which were created by its members.

Squidoo provides the platform, and its members provide the content.

This means that if YOU become a member, YOU can provide the content, along with a link back to your site.

Web 2.0 sites work much like article directories, you post articles and you get backlinks, the main difference being the extra features which the web 2.0 sites provide, like custom URL’s, subdomains, blogs, social widgets and the ability to control the appearance of the page you’re creating.

For the purpose of building backlinks, most of these features are pretty useless. (They can be useful if you’re planning to rank the properties themselves though, but thats another story)

So how do you get backlinks from these sites?

It’s pretty much the same as using an article directory…

Create accounts on the sites, post your content and drop some links, pretty self explanatory really.

Profiles Links

Building profile links is simple…

Create accounts on social sites and drop links in your profile.

There are THOUSANDS of social sites out there that you can do this on, and a lot of them have good PR passing through their pages.

One thing you must remember to do with these types of links is index your profile by building backlinks to it.

If you don’t build backlinks to your profile, Google will never find it and it will be lost among the thousands of other profiles on the site.

I used to think that profile link building would be a waste of time… Then I tried it.

And now it is an integral part of my link building routine.

Do profile links work?

YES

Should you use them?

Well your competition is, and you don’t want to give them the upper hand, do you?

But aren’t these links spammy?

Mmmmmmmm…. Yes and no.

I don’t see much of a problem with profile links because of two reasons:

1. You’re not posting crap content and messing up somebody elses site, their visitors are never going to see your profile.

2. When you create a profile and build backlinks to it you’re passing some link juice to that site, kind of returning the favour to the webmaster.

Video Marketing

Getting a variety of backlinks from lot’s of unique high PR domains is the basic premise of SEO.

So why not add video sites to your arsenal.

Sure it can take a little longer to get a link due to video creation and uploading, but there are a lot of video sites with GREAT PR, Youtube is PR 9!

Although you can’t use custom anchor text on most video sites, it’s still worth the effort as theres a good chance you’ll recieve some nice link juice back to your site.

And you can then pass that link juice to other pages on your site using custom anchor text on your internal links.

Or even out to another of your sites (as long as its on a different server).

If you have a new product, service or site about to launch, a new promotion or campaign, you can write a press release about it.

And even if you have nothing to announce yourself, you can write about the latest trends or industry gossip.

If your story is well written and truly news worthy it will be picked up by other news sites, gaining you backlinks from some sites with very high PR.
